30 Before Thirty: The List explained (Part 1)

The other day I shared a list of 30 things I would like to do before I turn Thirty. So I thought, let me elaborate a bit on each of them. Today I am looking at items 1 to 3 on the list. The first 3 on the list involve a lot of hiking and I know there is a lot of overlap between these items and a couple of the others on the list in terms of timing and planning, but I think starting with these items will set the pace for the rest of the items on the list.

Isn’t it funny how many times we say things like “I’d love to go.”, “I’ve always wanted to do that.”, or “I’m so jealous of all the things you do.” What I have realized are these two things… The first is that you are where you are because of your choices. Secondly, life is too short for you not to do the things that set your soul on fire.  So grab a cup of your favorite coffee (mine is Organo Gold) and let’s get right to the breakdown.

30 before Thirty (Part 1): the list explained

1) Go to 10 places in Gauteng I have been wanting to go.

Since moving to Gauteng, I have had a list of things, places I want to go, and hikes I want to do before moving again (next time I’m moving home). Granted, every time I look at the list it gets longer.

  1. Go hiking in Walter Sisulu Botanical garden
  2. Go hiking in Pretoria Botanical garden
  3. Go hiking Kings kloof
  4. Go hiking at Sabie ranch
  5. Go walking in Mushroom park
  6. Go hiking in Castle Gorge
  7. Go to Kloofendal Nature Reserve
  8. Go for a Walk in the Wilds
  9. Go to Monte Casino
  10. Go to Emperor’s Palace

I know, I know these last two came out of the left-field, but I had to put them on the list… I really can’t believe I have lived here for a year and a half and I have yet to see either one of those two.

2) Go to Blyde River Canyon before Thirty

A couple of years ago I was solemnly determined to be the next camp master in South Africa. Obviously, that was never realized. Life got in the way. However, if there was one place I always kept in the back of my mind, it was the Blyde River Canyon. I don’t know what it is, but there is something about a place that makes me feel small that draws me toward it. Probably the same reason why I like big water bodies so much. Being a 6-foot tall woman, not a lot of things can make me feel small. I am drawn to vastness. The Blyde River Canyon is a formation located in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Also a pristine hiking and getaway location.

3) Go 10 places in the Western Cape I have been wanting to go before Thirty

A couple of years ago, I called Gordon’s Bay home. It is a little coastal suburb in Cape Town. I met a couple of people there, that to this day, even though we don’t talk every day, we still remain great friends. Since my time living there, I have had a list of places that I would love to explore. These places are within the reaches of the Western Cape as a whole and not just confined to Cape Town.

  1. Go hiking Lion’s head
  2. Go hiking on Table Mountain
  3. Go hiking in Koggelberg
  4. Go hiking in Helderberg
  5. Go to Bloubergstrand
  6. Stay in Melkbosstrand for a couple of nights
  7. Go explore Groot Swartberg Nature Reserve
  8. Go hiking in Cedarburg
  9. Go to the Two Oceans Aquarium
  10. Go to the Kristenbosch Botanical garden
