Companionship – Better together

Ecclesiastes 4:8: “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.”

What is the saying? Team work makes the dream work?

No person is meant to go through life alone. That is not what God had intended for us. Since the very beginning of time in the Garden of Eden, God made man and woman to be together, to thrive together in companionship. Just as the Teacher in Ecclesiastes says we must ask ourselves what it all means if we do everything for ourselves by ourselves. How will we succeed in life if we go through life alone? We need companionship in every area of our lives.

We need companionship work, in our emotional lives and in our spiritual lives. So that ‘If one person falls, the other can reach out and help (As it says in Ecclesiastes 4:10). This is done in order to ensure that no one falls alone, as getting up after a stumble is much easier when you have someone to help lift you up.

On an emotional level, Ecclesiastes 4:11 says that “two people lying close together can keep each other warm” meaning that we all need companionship, we are not meant to walk through life completely alone, we are better off with someone working with you to inspire you, lift you up, encourage you and be a pillar of support on an emotional level. This is not necessarily through being in a romantic relationship but can also be a close friend. This is someone who makes you feel safe and at home whenever they are around. We usually view these people as those “We can truly be ourselves with, with no fear of condemnation, just love.”

Ecclesiastes 4:12 says that “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer.” The conquer referred to in this verse can been seen as a victory in both the physical and the spiritual realm. Two people can support one another to overcome their enemies and the obstacles placed in front of them together. This is done through the guidance of God and the wisdom provided by Him. In the spiritual realm, we rely on the fellowship with others to stand together as a unit to combat the enemy. God gives us the strength and the wisdom to stand in this fellowship to overcome the evil spirits around us.

He does not wish for us to fight our battles alone. He wants us to conquer the enemy, with other believers, through Him. He has given us this purpose in life. He has purposed us to call one another to action so that not one person fights their battles alone.
