We all have these ideas of what our perfect lives would be like if we had total control over every event in our lives. However, in this world we are not always free to choose some things in life. That being said, I do believe we have the ability to broadly control our day-to-day proceedings should we wish. To formulate your ideal day, you would first have to describe what your day normally looks like and identify the areas where you would want to improve upon.

As for myself, my usual daily routine looks like this:

  1. 6:30 to 7:00: Wakeup and get ready for work (Yes, it only takes me a half an hour to shower, get dressed and drive to work. On most days, I spend little to no time on hair and make-up.)
  2. At work working from 7:00 to 15:00 (I work 8 hours a day for the environmental consultancy)
  3. 15:00 to 16:00 – Relaxing (This time is usually spent watching How I met your mother, Revenge or Vikings. Mindless series that I have watched a thousand times before) The purpose of this slot is to clear my mind from all of the environmental things, prior to starting with blogging. However, what has been happening for the last couple of days is my brain completely shuts down, leaving me with little motivation to continue with the blogging thereafter. Thus…
  4. 16:00 to 19:00 – Try to write content for the blog
  5. 19:00 to 20:00 – Prepare dinner and eat (Normal evening things – eat, shower, phone my family etc)
  6. 20:00 to 22:00 – Try to write content for the blog.
  7. 22:00 to 6:30 – Sleep (If my sleeplessness is subdued for the evening).

Recently my daily routine seemed to be wildly unbalanced, as most of my time is spent behind my laptop screen, whether it was productive or not, with little to no time allowed for extensive spiritual, physical or mental growth. You know, to a degree that it would beneficial to me in all the wakes of life.

I see no point in creating and verbalizing the ideas of an ideal day, if no active notion is made towards achieving it. I have been using the Bullet journaling method to plan and journal my life out for the last couple of years and will be using it this time around to see if the ideal day at this point in my life would be possible. For this to work, I would have to split the idea of an ideal day into two categories (especially since there are numerous public holidays coming up and I mean weekends… I will be tracking the achievability of the ideal day for the next 30 days and thereafter, I will evaluate the time expenditure of the month and how time can be better bestowed in more productive or lucrative ways.

My ideal weekday-day

For the purpose of the weekdays section, I first want to evaluate the amount of hours required per activity (work, exercise, blogging, etc) followed by a realistic determination of how the hours will be distributed from Monday to Friday. So… 5 days, 120 hours and many things to do. Let’s get planning. Here are the things that require attention in my day to day life:

Work (8 hours a day) – 40 hours*

Devotions (10% of my day = 2.5 hours a day) – 12.5 hours

Sleep (I personally need 6 hours to be a normal functioning contributor to society) – 30 hours

Blogging (4 hours a day) – 20 hours

Self-care (2 hours a day) – 10 hours

Relaxation (1 hour every other day) – 3 hours

*Only 37 hours actually required as we finish work at 13:00 on a Friday, thus even though the above tallies up to 115.5 hours, it would actually result in 112.5 hours should the 3 hour downtime on a Friday be considered

This is thus how I would like my ideal day to look like:

  1. Wake up at 04:15
  2. Do Bible study for one and a half hours
  3. Do exercise for 45 minutes (perhaps go jogging or do exercises with elastic bands)
  4. Get ready for work for a half an hour
  5. Work for 8 hours
  6. Have one hour of relaxation
  7. Blog for two hours
  8. Do a self-care activity for one hour and fifteen minutes
  9. Blog for two hours
  10. Do Bible study for one hour before going to bed

My ideal weekend day

In order to stay in routine, the start to the weekends cannot be different to that of the weekdays. Therefore, the first four steps for each of the days of the weekend and those experienced on public holidays will be similar to the normal weekdays.

  1. Wake up at 04:15
  2. Do Bible study for one and a half hours
  3. Do exercise of 45 minutes (In the form of swimming or yoga)
  4. Get ready for the day’s activities
  5. Blog for two hours
  6. Do something outdoorsy
  7. Spend time with friends and/or family
  8. Do a DIY project
  9. Blog for two hours
  10. Do Bible study for one hour before going to bed

After a period of 30 days, I will check in with this strategy again in order to determine its effectiveness and to make changes to the ideal day. Fact is people change, our desires change and our circumstances change. We need to be able to adapt the pictures in our minds accordingly, else we start feeling stagnant.
